One Size Fits All: Taking a Closer Look at One Size Fits All Clothing Brands

I recently started shopping at PacSun more frequently than before. This is partially because I actually live near a mall since I've moved to Cincinnati, and partially because of their increasingly trendy and cute designs.

While a lot of the clothes at PacSun have many size varieties, there are a few brands that still lack inclusivity size wise. One of those brands is J. Galt.

The first thing I bought from J. Galt was this adorable, cropped sweatshirt. I honestly love it. Not only is it super cute, but the quality was better than SHEIN and for a good price. I felt trendy and cute after I got it, and was able to pair it with a cute pair of Tommy Hilfiger biker shorts. I was so excited.

However, my excitement was a little dampened by the thought that these designs were all "one size fits all".

I couldn't stop thinking about it. I couldn't stop thinking about how a brand could only make one size of a product, and one size that only fits the minority of girls.

So, let's start with this, I looked on the Brandy Melville and J. Galt website to check out the measurements of one of the skirts they have. There is only one size available, which they call a size extra small/small. Then, I took a look at the measurements on the skirt and saw that the waist size was 26", which is a very small size.

Now, if you can fit into one of these skirts, then that's awesome! Brandy Melville and J. Galt clothing is super cute, and if you can wear it, then go for it. The point I'm trying to make here is that even though some people can fit into these clothes, by saying that "one size fits all", brands like these are perpetuating a negative view on body image to a large majority of women.

Next, I took a look at the tops these "one size fits all" brands offer. The tops are also only sold in a size extra small/small. I can fit into most of these tops, and actually own a couple cute ones, but I don't think by any means that this one size can fit everyone. Everyone's built differently, and assuming that one size fits all is wildly ridiculous.

You would think that everyone would know that this notion of "one size fits all" is ridiculous, right?

Well, they do know.

I think part of the reason "one size fits all" brands like Brandy Melville and J. Galt make their clothing only one size is to make their clothing just out of reach for most people. This gives the brand the sense of being a luxury, and not a luxury because of the price, but because most women can't fit into these sizes.

To investigate further, I sent out an email to try to contact someone from customer service to ask about their sizing, so if they ever get back to me, I'll write another article with an update.

For now though, I think we can all agree on one thing; "one size fits all" does not mean one size fits all, and women shouldn't have to feel like this one size standard is something they have to attain to feel beautiful.
